Satin White

A soft, satin-matte white glaze with a smooth, velvety surface and subtle depth. One for those who like their handmade pottery to be minimal, warm, and tactile.

Evoking natural chalks, weathered stone, and eggshells, Satin White appears calm and simple at first glance. Look closer and you'll find subtle variation throughout. Different clay bodies gently influence the tone, textured surfaces show through the glaze, and tiny specks create a depth that's difficult to capture in photographs. Its position in the kiln can also subtly affect the finish, creating slight variations in sheen from piece to piece and making each one unique.

I created this glaze to be understated, durable, and mindful of the materials used to make it. Traditionally, tin is often used to create opacity in stoneware glazes, but as a finite resource facing increasing pressure, I chose to use zirconium instead.

I'm now developing an even more eco-conscious white glaze using wood ash and no added metal oxides at all. It's still a work in progress, but I'm excited to see where it leads.
